1) There was/is already a 2600 port under development (what's the state if that one, anyway?). And the 7800 is a 
totally different beast, it just happens to be/contain a 2600 aswell.
2) The whole thing started out as an experiment in 7800 development using cc65 - the 7800 port is written entirely in 
C. And so is the upcoming Colecovision port (uses sdcc).
